The RSV Nuyina has been immortalized on four stamps issued by the Australian post office.

The four stamps highlight the ship’s modern design, its role as an Antarctic icebreaking research and supply vessel, and the origin of the name Nuyina.

Australia Post released the four Australian Antarctic Territory themed stamps on September 29. The series is also available as a special souvenir sheet containing all four stamps.

The Australian post office is presenting the special issue stamps to commemorate the arrival of the icebreaker in its home port of Hobart in 2021. Each stamp features a photo of the RSV Nuyina and one also shows a beautiful black and white drawing of the side view of the ship.

This is “a great initiative,” says Production Coordinator Arend van Veelen. “This offers collectors an excellent opportunity to own something tangible about a ship that we will be commissioning here in the Netherlands and that will soon be sailing to the other side of the world.”

The four stamps are the latest in a series of special issues from Australia Post with the theme ‘Antarctica’. Previously published series include:

  • From 2014: Commemorating the centennial of the Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914);
  • From 2017: A series of stamp illustrating East Antarctic Deep Sea Creature;
  • From 2019: A edition called Mapping the Australian Territory;
  • Earlier this year: Commemorating HMAS Wyatt Earp’s expedition in 1948.
