Earlier this year, Damen Schelde Marine Services (DSMS) moved into its new head office on Louis Pasteurweg in Vlissingen, marking an important step in the company’s continued development. The new facility brings DSMS and Maritime Logistics together under one roof, creating more space for growth, closer collaboration and further development of the services DSMS provides to customers.

On 24 September, it was time to officially open the new location. Around 70 guests joined DSMS colleagues for a celebratory afternoon of speeches, tours of the new facility and, of course, something to eat and drink.

The guest list reflected the many people and organisations involved in DSMS’s development over the years. Representatives from the Municipality of Vlissingen, the companies involved in the construction and outfitting of the new offices and warehouse, Damen Shipyards Group’s head office in Gorinchem, colleagues from the ’s-Gravendeel office and workshop, Schelde Engine Services, suppliers and other close business partners all came together to celebrate the occasion.

A celebration of the people
The official opening began with three speeches from Municipality of Vlissingen councillor Wilfried Boonman, Damen Ventures Executive Director Emile Poot, and DSMS Managing Director Arnold Suykerbuyk. A common theme was notable in all three speeches: the historic and collaborative relationship between Damen and the city of Vlissingen that is defined by the passion and drive of everyone involved.

A particular section of Arnold’s speech summed up this message perfectly. “This building is not the endpoint of our development, but the beginning of a new phase,” he said. “Ultimately, it is not the buildings, but the people who make the difference every day for our customers and for Damen.”
It is a message that matches the development of DSMS over recent years. From being primarily an engine parts supplier, DSMS has evolved into a more integrated maritime service organisation, combining spare parts, logistics, overhaul, technical services and global support. “The new facility provides the physical space to bring these activities closer together, but it is the knowledge, dedication and craftsmanship of DSMS colleagues that make the organisation work,” Arnold went on to say.
And then came the official signal that the new chapter had begun: the cutting of a ceremonial ribbon by Arnold’s two daughters Julia and Sophie, and the firing of a huge confetti cannon.
Showing what happens behind the scenes
After raising a glass of sparkling wine, guests could take a tour of the new facility with DSMS team members explaining what actually happens there and how the different departments contribute to the overall operation. After the tours, guests gathered for a walking dinner: a fitting end to an afternoon that was less about celebrating a building and more about applauding the people working in it.
