Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen is preparing for its next major naval maintenance project. Set to begin in early 2026, DSV will be coordinating the maintenance and conservation programme of the Royal Netherlands Navy Joint logistic Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman. DSV is currently finalising the contractual scope with the Netherlands Directorate of Materiel Sustainment (DMI). “We’ve already secured the engineering scope and are in the final stages of concluding the maintenance contract,” says DSV’s Commercial Manager Jeroen Schotel.
In addition to standard vessel maintenance items such as a large painting scope, overhaul of the overboard valves and related steelwork, the IP part of the project will include the renewal of the vessel’s torpedo defence system, the RHIB davit system, combat management system, and deck mist dispersal systems as well as numerous other engineering items.
The HNLMS Karel Doorman, built by Damen Naval, was commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Navy on 24 April 2015.
The HNLMS Karel Doorman maintenance and IP project is expected to last approximately fourteen months, including a three to four month docking period at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam.
The project represents the value of effective cooperation. “An important element in securing this project has been our strong relationship with DMI,” adds Jeroen. “This Karel Doorman project will be overseen by the same DMI project management team that worked with us on the Johan de Witt, on which there was great synergy and trust between the teams. In that respect, we are looking forward to working again with DMI.”

As well as the cooperation with DMI, this project is a true showcase of how Damen companies can work together. As the main contractor, DSV is leading the project management, Damen Naval is providing engineering support, Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam will handle the docking period and a scope of work specified by DSV, and Damen Shipyards Den Helder is involved in other areas.
“This is a really nice collaboration between four different Damen companies – you will really get to see the ‘Damen landscape’ working on this project. In particular, it’s great that Damen Naval is so close to us. If we come across any engineering issues, we can knock on their door and ask for their support,” concludes Jeroen.
