On Monday 10 October, the bell at Damen Naval head office was rung to celebrate that Damen Naval has signed a design contract with COTECMAR, the naval shipyard of the Colombian Navy. This is a design study in which Colombia is looking at a forthcoming class of frigates under the name Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES).

The success is the result of a long-term and positive relationship built up with the Colombian navy and the Ministry of Defence, which has already resulted, among other things, in Damen now building a hydrographic survey vessel there, also at the COTECMAR yard.

This contract involves the joint further development of Damen Naval’s previously delivered SIGMA 10514. The end product of this study is the basis for a contract design for an upcoming generation of frigates for Colombia. This design project will last between eight and twelve months. As such, Damen Naval and SIGMA maintain visibility in the PES programme, which includes the prospect of supervising local construction at the COTECMAR yard.

The project will be carried out by colleagues from the Products and Proposals (P&P) department with limited support from other departments. It will be done alongside our already ongoing projects without affecting those schedules and work.
