On Sunday 5 March, two Damen Naval teams took part in the ‘65 of Walcheren’ run. “It was tough with a headwind, but I gave it my all,” says Stan Haag, Production Coordinator at Damen Naval and one of the participants.

The 65 of Walcheren is a 65-kilometre route around Walcheren, starting and finishing in Vrouwenpolder. Stan participated for the first time. He says: “Our colleague Martin Wattel had got a group of colleagues enthusiastic and asked me to take part too: I thought it would be great fun! I am training for the quarter marathon in Rotterdam, so this was good training for me.”

Two teams of twelve Damen Naval employees in total competed in the relay race. Stan: “It’s a motley crew of colleagues, from IT to Production.” He explains further, “We had a relay schedule and did a relay race with two teams. Each ran part of the course.” What did Stan like about participating? “The team spirit. What I think is cool is that you do something together outside work, I get a huge team feeling from that. It feels a bit like family; that makes me happy.”

After the finish, they had a beer together. And are there any plans for the future in terms of sports? “No doubt we will participate again next year,” says Stan. “So if more colleagues want to run with us, that will be fun!”
