Since the contract for the four new Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates was signed in June last year, a lot has been happening behind the scenes. So it’s high time for an update with Project Director Joop Noordijk. “Since the contract signing, we have filled the project with the resources we need. We now have around 120-130 FTEs working on the project. There are still some vacancies to be filled and we hope to add around 30-40 FTEs by mid-2024.”

Engineers have started working out the plans and several contracts have already been signed with suppliers including ABB, Alewijnse, Heinen & Hopman and MAN Energy. Joop: “We are also already looking to start the detailed engineering at MEGA in Romania by the middle of this year and in January 2025 we want to start production by cutting the first steel in Galaţi.”

The project is really starting to gain momentum and one of the aspects the project management is paying a lot of attention to is team spirit. “We have people working in Vlissingen and Schiedam and we have a Team Leader and an Assistant Team Leader for all the teams. Every day one of them is in Vlissingen and the other in Schiedam,” Joop explains. “We also have drinks together once every six to eight weeks in both Vlissingen and Schiedam where we update everyone from the project team and from departments such as engineering and procurement on the progress. All this works very well to keep everyone in touch with each other.”
